The Mombasa Law Courts has granted an application by police to detain the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of her 50-year-old lover.
Purity Mukami Kalunge, 23, appeared before Mombasa senior resident Magistrate David Odhiambo yesterday where the Investigating Officer (IO) police constable Moses Lemako sought a 14-day detention period to complete ongoing investigations into the murder.
Mukami stands accused of killing Abdallah Rashid Mwamba, whose lifeless body was discovered in their rented room at Likoni’s Mtaa wa Maka area in Mombasa on May 12, 2024 at around 100hrs.
While making the application, Pc Lemako informed the court that police require additional time to present the suspect for mental assessment and record witness statements.
PC Lemako added that police are also expecting to obtain a psychiatric report of the suspect after the assessment.
Magistrate Odhiambo granted the application on grounds that it is a matter of public interest, but stated that the suspect be detained for just 14 days from the date of her arrest at the Likoni police Station.
The case will be mentioned on June 10, 2024.
Purity was apprehended on Thursday 24, last week at Ruiru in Kiambu county while on the run, after preliminary investigations suggested that she killed Abdallah over an alleged domestic quarrel.
The lifeless body of the slain businessman who owned a fish stall at Ferry area was discovered by neighbors in their rented room who rushed him to the coast general hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
