
Jimmy Charles Mureithi who appeared before senior Mombasa resident magistrate, David Odhiambo,faced the charges of publication of false information, contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018 where he pleaded not guilty.
Mureith is reported to have published false information on his Facebook account under the name ‘Mureithi Wa Lucy’, claiming that one, Loise Makena swindled Kilifi Governor, H.E. Gideon Mun’garo, thereby discrediting her reputation.
The particulars of the case being that Jimmy Charles Mureith, on unknown date, time and place knowingly published information that are false in print broadcasted over a social media platform namely Facebook account name “Mureith Wa Lucy” that Ms. Loise Makena Swindled the Governor of Kilifi County H.E Gideon Mung’aro two hundred million Kenya Shillings (ksh.200,000,000) an act which is likely to discredit the reputation of Ms.Makena.
Senior Prosecution Counsel Babra Sombo opposed immediate release of the suspect on bail citing that he was still under further police investigation.
The police had sought orders to have the suspect detained for several days to allow them complete investigations, including forensic analysis of two mobile phones recovered during the arrest which are suspected to have been used to commit the alleged crime.
Police told the court that forensic analysis results could reveal whether there were other accomplices.
Hon. Odhiambo however ordered the accused be remanded at Mombasa Central Police Station for two days to allow police to conclude their investigations.
The court further ordered the suspect to appear in court on 11th April 2024, where he will be released on a Ksh 500,000 bond with one surety of similar amount.
