A one day old baby was today morning rescued from a pit latrine in Likoni Mombasa county after a pregnant woman developed labour pains while relieving herself.

According to police, the 26-year-old Amina Juma is said to have had in the morning visited Likoni sub-county hospital where she sought treatment for a paining kidney complication.

However moments later while still at the waiting bay she allegedly excused herself to go use the hospitals pit latrine and in the process she gave birth and the baby fell inside the 40ft pit latrine.

“We suspect no foul play although investigations are ongoing to establish why she did inform doctors that she was pregnant and was in labor pains and instead presented different symptoms,”said a senior officer privy with the ongoing investigations.

With the help of Mombasa county government fire department officers and police the infant was rescued and later referred to Coast general referral hospital for specialized treatment.

“The baby has since been rescued she is in stable condition alongside the mother who is also at the hospitals maternity”,said the officer

It still remains unclear on why Amina did not disclose to the doctors at the institution that she was pregnant since at the time she visited the hospital she was dressed in a buibui that hid her pregnancy.
