A man in court yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing a mobile phone while posing as a boda boda rider.
Hassan Albert Chikophe who appeared before Mombasa Chief magistrate Martha Mutuku pleaded guility to the charges.
The court heard that Chikophe alongside three other suspects who are still at large,is the mastermind of a phone snatching syndicate within Mombasa while posing as boda boda riders in the morning and late hours .
The particulars are that on December 28,2022 at Buxton area in Mvita sub-county within the county of Mombasa, jointly with others not before court Chikophe snatched a Samsung Note 8 mobile phone valued at kshs.44,000 from Kelvin Rodgers.
The court heard that on the fateful day at around 6:30pm Rodgers was on another motorbike driven by his friend from Nyali heading to Miritini and upon reaching Buxton area they got into a traffic jam which forced them to slow down.
Then all of a sudden there came another motorbike ferrying four passengers that was headed to the same direction.
They managed to trail the suspect with the help of other boda boda riders,and upon reaching Jomvu area,the assailants ran out of fuel, they ran away leaving behind the motorbike.
Police managed to recover the,motorbike which was used by the suspect it will be used as evidence in court.
The case will be mentioned on February 22, this year for sentencing.
Mutuku directed the court be provided with a probation report to help the court,in sentencing the suspect.
