A third-year student at the Technical University of Mombasa committed suicide yesterday few hours after speaking to his girlfriend.

The community around the University in Mombasa county reeled in shock after they discovered Gregory Mutinda’s body lying on the floor of his house at Kaa Chonjo area in Tudor Mvita sub-county.

Mutinda’s girlfriend, Mercy Munyao, also a student in the same university said she had talked to her boyfriend on phone in the morning and did not seem to have any problem but in the evening when she tried to reach him, he could not pick her calls. She became suspicious, this prompted her while in company of another friend to rush to the deceased’s house to check on him where they were shocked to find his body soaked in a pool of blood and raised alarm.

Police reports indicated that the body of the 24-year-old student was found in the floor of his rented house which was locked from inside.

A syringe with some fluids, pesticide powder, a kitchen knife and blood stained clothes were also found besides his body.

The report also revealed that Mutinda’s body had one deep knife stab.

Mutinda was on attachment at the Kenya pipeline company Changamwe.

His body was collected and taken to the Coast general hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
